Hi Rachel please don't pay attention to ignorant commentary on addiction-some people have not directly (or indirectly-through family and/or friends) experienced addiction so they don't understand. Addiction is a disease and it's great to see the progress you've made in such a short space of time. The past is only as important as we make it ourselves. What matters is where we're at today :)
i have just finished reading your book Rachael, i am currently coming off heroin myself have gone 8 days today with no outside help, your book has been brilliant for me and a bit of an eye opener as to how bad it can really get i am having counselling starting tomorrow hopefully this will be the end of it all for me.I can totally understand everything you said i feel ashamed of myself for letting myself fall in so deeply with the wrong man, who had a hand in my drug addiction. luckily i have a wonderful family who havent judged me and have helped me through this first painfull week. My hat goes off to you and im sure many people would have done the same as you.People just dont understand addicts and i used to turn my nose up at addicts too. Its a hard battle and until people have seen it first hand themselves they will never know...its just ignorance!
I'm a 29-year-old mother of one, college student and drugs survivor from Ballymun in Dublin.
I started drinking aged 11 and by the time I was 14 heroin had taken its deadly hold.
In 2006 I went public about my drug addiction because I felt there was no other way of getting help. Sky News did a documentary about me and now I've a book coming out about my experiences.
